Personal development is the act of improving oneself physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. These four domains are very important as each domain interacts one with the other and bring about a balanced lifestyle. Through a continuous conscious effort, the four domains will move an individual to becoming the best version of him or herself. This of course is not an easy journey because people tend to have a set of daily routines that leans to one side more than the other. Most of the time the routine is based on work or personal life which leads to a neglect of a domain that affects their personal growth and development. Being the best possible version of oneself is the best gift anyone can give his or her self. Earlier today, we met the team of Practice-U and they were very excited about sharing some tips and techniques for anyone who wants to go on a self-improvement journey.

  1. Accept the Need for Change

The first step to self-improvement is accepting that things need to change. Change is hard to accept hence people just stay in their current situation. It is scary because no one knows what will happen next. Do not let this make you stay in situations that make you unhappy. Let go of the fear of the unknown and find happiness and fulfilment.

  1. Identify the Areas that Need Change

Write down an honest list of all the areas that need to be changed. Do not leave anything out especially the small bad habits. Examples of bad habits that you may need to change are TV time, not exercising, drinking too much, eating junk food, not eating fruits and green vegetables, being late to work, not trying your level best among others. Some habits like not eating fruits and green vegetables may seem small but they have a big impact on your health and life span.

  1. Create an Action Plan

Action plans need to be as detailed as possible to avoid shortcuts. An action plan lays out a guideline on how to achieve the goals set in mind. For example, to get to work early prepare the next day’s outfit in advance and leave the house 10 minutes earlier. To avoid eating junk food, write a list of healthy snack food that will clean your digestive tract and prevent high cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes. After all certain fruits and vegetables are the equivalent of medicine that works for your body and not against your body. Make sure to add plenty of water in lieu of alcoholic beverages or sugary drinks. Water is so much better than any liquid one can put into his or her body. In addition, write a simple meal plan for the week and shop for the necessary ingredients. Ultimately, in order for an action plan to work it needs to be followed strictly without excuses.

  1. Know Yourself

Find out what makes you happy and satisfied. A self-discovery journey involves trying different things to find the ones that interest you. Do not hold back or judge things and activities based on perception only. Find your motivation for work and life. Go after your dreams and Strive hard to achieve your goals. Everyone’s tastes in things evolve as they grow older or when they are in different situation. Knowing your likes and dislikes will bring into focus what kind of person you want to be.

  1. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

As human beings, we are prone to finding a comfort zone. This is a zone where everything is good and we don’t have to work hard. The comfort zone is not your friend. Anything good in this life requires a lot of work. To get that beautiful body you need to eat clean and exercise at least 30 minutes a day. To get your dream job you will have to work hard at work to get a promotion or improve your skills and find another job. To keep yourself alive on the inside you will have to add reading daily positive affirmations to your morning routine, then meditate, reflect and share what you read throughout the day. Meditating, praying, reading your Bible and sharing are more examples within ones reach to help address the mental, spiritual and emotional domains.  Don’t continue to focus only on the physical domain. Remember, comfort zones give you an illusion that life is perfect when it’s not. Do something you would not do normally to get out of the comfort zone for the benefit of your overall growth and personal development in each of the four domains.
